School Mornings… How Are We Doing This?

School mornings as a full-time mom and teacher… how are we doing it? Because, boy, I feel like I have tried everything, and somehow there is still never enough time.

The outfits. The lunches. The signed notes. Remembering who is having hot lunch and who needs cold lunch. Making sure the extra bag is packed and there is a snack ready for the next after-school activity.

Oh, and somewhere in there, you are also supposed to get yourself ready and look presentable. Preferably with matching shoes.

For a long time, I tried to make our mornings smoother by doing more myself. If I just got up earlier, packed one more thing, or reminded everyone enough times, surely we would leave the house calmly.

What have I found actually helps?

Making my kids responsible for the things they can do themselves.

Not all at once, and not without reminders. But I realized I did not have to be the only person getting everyone ready.

Pick the Outfit the Night Before

My kids pick out their clothes before bed. That means fewer early-morning decisions and fewer last-minute searches for the one shirt they suddenly need to wear.

My youngest sometimes even wears her outfit to bed because she hates mornings. And honestly? If it works for her, I have learned to let it work for me, too.

Is it everyone’s solution? Probably not. Does it take one thing off our morning list? Yes. We are going with it.

Don’t Like Tomorrow’s Hot Lunch? Pack Your Lunch Tonight.

If my kids do not like the hot lunch choice for the next day, they help take care of the alternative by making their lunch the night before.

My job becomes a quick check, maybe a suggestion, and a counter wipe-down.

Of course, younger kids need more help. But they can still choose a fruit, put items in their lunch bag, or help fill a water bottle. They do not have to do every step independently to start taking ownership.

And I get to cross one more thing off the morning list.

Give Their Stuff a Home

You do not need a beautiful entryway with personalized lockers and matching baskets to have a morning station.

Ours is “the little couch.”

That is it. That is the system.

Shoes, outfit, backpack, and coat all have a place to land so we know where to look when it is time to get ready and head out. Activity bags go there, too, when we need them.

It does not have to be fancy. It just has to work for your family.

Still Hectic, but Better

Are our mornings perfectly smooth now? Absolutely not.

There are still reminders, missing things, and moments when I wonder how we are already running late. But it is much better than it used to be.

My kids are learning to prepare, make choices, and take care of their belongings. And I am learning to give them the time and space to practice—even when I could do it faster myself.

I spend my school day helping little learners become more independent. Turns out, I needed to make a little more room for that at home, too.

So if your school mornings feel like a lot, ours do, too. Around here, we are laying out clothes, packing lunches, piling things on the little couch, and celebrating when everyone makes it out the door.

One less thing for Mom to remember is a little success worth keeping.
